Hey, I'm back. Finally, our independent project has come to an end. For this project my end goal was to create a poetry book with my own illustrations. Sadly, as the project was coming to an end another covid lockdown hit, and I was unable to scan my drawings into a book. I had been home for a week from sickness and didn’t have a chance to turn it into book form. I now have a series of drawings and poems, seperate. Since I can only use my phone camera, it's difficult to get precise photos of my drawings, but it has worked out. Some days, I found it very difficult to stay motivated on the task at hand, dozing off or zoning out. Next time, I think I’ll do something slightly easier, like a set of paintings. Thankfully, I think the message of my work still shows, even though things didn't come together as planned.

I’m back! We’ve finally hit our halfway point and I'm ecstatic to say everything's coming along very well. I have finished around ten drawings and 15 poems, still brainstorming on my next pieces and literature ideas for the book. On top of this, I’ve successfully created my book cover. The title is called “Sonder,” meaning “The realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own.”
Staying motivated has been difficult for me, as I get constantly hit with waves of exhaustion. But, I’ve come this far and I plan on keeping up. Sometimes the watercolor can get messy, smearing over the white of the paper which is not ideal. But it always works out. My color scheme is a sage green through the cover and pages. I’m slightly nervous about turning it into a full blown book, as it may not look too good and I tend to perfectionate everything. Overall, things have been going well and i'm excited to see the end results! Hi! It’s been awhile since i’ve written a blog, but here we are beginning our Independent Projects. Over the past two months, I’ve been brainstorming creative ideas in which I can incorporate my art into. My first plan was to write a story; but I quickly realized this would be quite hard to achieve as I have no basic story plots completed. Then, I decided on a short poetry book. I’ve always been very intrigued by writing, and creating a book with my own Illustrations would be a dream come true. So here we are, planning out how I’ll successfully complete this. First, I’ve decided on a main focus for the poems and meaning. For me, mental illness is a huge focus, as it's something I've been dealing with so it's very close to home. I want to bring light to this, as many children and young adults are turned away from help when they need it most. This book will have some sensitive content, as it describes what life feels like battling a mental illness. The illustrations will be made with watercolor, including the title of the book. To achieve this plan, I’ve created a simple schedule. Three illustrations a week, and five poems. This will leave me with a short but meaningful book; around 25-40 pages long.
To showcase my work afterwards, the easiest way would be a trifold. I’ll display the cover, along with the most complex illustrations and poems. I’m super excited to take on this project! After watching the documentary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quO_Dzm4rnk&feature=youtu.be
( RiP: A Remix Manifesto ) My initial thoughts on this documentary were that it was going to be about plagiarism, what we can and can’t use. I assumed it would be basic and boring, but we soon saw it was about many different perspectives, and ideas being shared. Something that stuck with me, is how the copyright laws will sue so easily with zero sympathy or understanding. The fact that a single mom downloaded some songs and got sued was absolutely outrageous. Honestly, I believe I am copyleft. In my opinion, things should be allowed to be shared. As long as it isn't the exact original, and it’s somehow altered it should be ok, and you shouldn’t get sued for expressing something. I think this is when the media produces any kind of product to an audience. The relationship is when the audience watches, reads, listens, or interacts with what they produced. The creators produce things for consumption. In my opinion, you should have access to many things without being sued. As long as it's slightly altered, or you give credit at the end it should be okay. With art, you should be able to create what you want freely. An example, if you are painting someone you should need their permission, since they're the one who is being painted. And if you are copying something, alter it or give credit somewhere to show who inspired you. Progression in Profession
“Painting is self discovery. Every good artist paints what he is.” - Jackson Polluck. In the Art Academy, having goals is extremely important. You have to be able to improve, and without pushing yourself you can’t get better. One of my goals for this semester is to learn how to use Prismacolors, and learn techniques for, as well as improving my skills at using, watercolor paints. To achieve these goals, I will be creating two pieces of artwork a week. This will be on Tuesday and Thursday after school. I’ll work on each piece for an hour, around 5:00PM to 6:00PM. While working, I’ll watch youtube videos to better my understanding and learn certain skills and techniques. On the days I practice, I’ll set reminders on my phone and calendar. Once done the pieces, I’ll put a date on them so I can see my work progress throughout the semester. An artist can’t get better without failed attempts at learning, or else you wouldn’t be an artist. |
